As part of our youth program, Outlook Nebraska has put together a series of monthly recreation events for blind and visually impaired teens. Under the leadership of adaptive sports specialists, each participant is paired with a volunteer to ensure they have the support and guidance needed to safely explore a new adventure. So far, the teens have enjoyed a workout boot camp, roller skating, and ice skating with the Omaha Junior Lancers hockey team.
“These activities help parents of blind teens understand that their teen can get out there and be socially engaged just like their peers,” Lisa Kelly, Director of Enrichment Programs, said. “We can help them do this in a safe and comfortable environment.”
In the words of a participant in February’s rollerskating event: “If you come to this, you will learn so much. You should come because it is a great experience.”
Upcoming events include trampolining at Defy Gravity and fishing at Two Rivers State Park. Visit www.outlooknebraska.org/TeenRec for more information and to register for this activity or others.
