Goalball is a Paralympic sport designed specifically for the visually impaired. Two teams of 3 players face each other on opposite sides of a volleyball court as they take aim rolling a ball embedded with a bell, trying to get it past the defender’s line to score a goal. Defenders use their body to block the ball from getting past them. Here’s the thing: each player must wear sleep shades, which evens the playing field for everyone involved, meaning sighted players won’t have an advantage over visually impaired peers. A keen sense of hearing and teamwork makes this sport enjoyable for teens and adults alike.
Outlook Enrichment's Adaptive Sports Specialists in collaboration with the University of Nebraska Omaha and Nebraska Adaptive sports offers both Recreational and Competive Traveling Goalball teams. Our recreational league is for youth and adults ages 12 who are just learning the game or playing for the fun of it and aren’t quite ready to make it their year- round sport. The Recreational team meets at UNO HPER gym for six weeks February-March on Saturday’s from 2pm-4pm. Cost is $30 for six weeks and participants are encouraged to get their own elbow and knee pads. The hardest part of the league is keeping quiet so others can hear the ball when you want to laugh and shout! Our Competitive league is for those who are eager to dedicate their own time to regular practices, fundraising for travel, and getting in top physical shape. The Outlook Mavericks adult male team practices three times a month and travels around the country to play in Paralympic competition. Our just-forming U-19 team, in collaboration with NebNAPVI will practice over the summer and in the fall with travel to at least two tournaments including youth nationals.
Want to be a part of the Goalball action? Join our Recreational Goalball League for youth and adults ages 12 and up. We meet for six weeks in the winter to develop our skills and play a friendly competitive tournament.
If you’re ready to take your game to the next level, then join our competition team, the Outlook Mavericks. We play in national competitions traveling to where the game takes us. Call Paulette Monthei at 402-614-3331 for more information.
